A passion for puzzles Posted by Ralph Cheung, 12th March 20

[1] I fit the last piece into place. Finally, it's done — the detailed photo of a tiger strolling through a jungle. It's taken me a week to find places for all 1,500 pieces, and now I have the feeling of satisfaction I always get after completing something challenging.

[2] When my aunt gave me a 500-piece jigsaw for my last birthday, one word came to mind: boring! It wasn't until a few months later — during a typhoon — that I learnt how wrong I'd been about the hobby. I usually spend my free time playing games on my phone or chatting on social media. However, while working on the puzzle, I didn't check my phone once. The stress I was feeling about schoolwork and tests soon melted away, and I felt relaxed and calm. After that, I continued to do jigsaws in my free time. I noticed I could concentrate better and was more alert to details. Needless to say, both are having a positive impact on my schoolwork.

[3] Since I've become a 'puzzler', I've learnt more about jigsaws. The world's firstjigsaw puzzle was created in the 1760s by a London mapmaker named John Spilsbury. Back then, jigsaws were made of wood and usually showed an image of a map. This made them ideal tools for Geography lessons. They were extremely popular among wealthy families. By 1890, mostjigsaw puzzles were made of cardboard. They were less expensive, so more people could enjoy them.

[4] Nowadays, there are many different types of jigsaw puzzles available. Double-sided ones are a headache! I had a go at a 100-piece double-sided puzzle and it took me over a week to complete it. However, I think the most challenging one is the'no-picture' jigsaw. There's nothing to go by except the shape ofthe pieces. I'd like to try one someday. The coolest ones are 3-Djigsaw puzzles because they're not flat pictures. I have several, including a globe and a castle. There are also jigsaw puzzle apps, which are convenient for when I'm riding a bus or the MTR.

[5] With so many types of jigsaw puzzles to choose from, why not try one today?
